Prince of Peace (Jehovah Shalom)
The prophet Isaiah wrote about the Prince of Peace 700 years before Jesus was ever born. That’s mind blowing to me!
“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
I absolutely love this verse. In a few extremely powerful words it tells us exactly who Jesus is, his position in this world, what his authority is, the place he holds in Heaven and what he came to accomplish. Peace….Jehovah Shalom, or Prince of Peace, is the name of Jesus I would like to share today.
There’s so much hidden meaning in a name, any name. The power in the names of Jesus are no different. They are inspirational, powerful and significant as well as full of sweet revelation.
Jehovah Shalom is a name that brings me great comfort. This is the name I just want to wrap myself up in to hide from the world sometimes. Because of this name though, I realize I am able to face anything the world or the people of it, throws at me. In difficult times I remind myself of the true nature of Jesus and am encouraged by scriptures of peace.
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3 ESV
I am comforted and take ahold of the peace that is found in the presence of my relationship with Jesus. It’s a peace that I can be certain guides me through the worst of troubles. It’s the kind of peace that can only come through having a relationship with Jesus, Prince of Peace. We cannot earn it or buy it! To know Jesus is to know peace. Experiencing peace is a byproduct of our relationship with Jesus.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13 ESV
By dying on the cross Jesus gave us peace through reconciliation with God. Which means we need not fear the future because Jesus paid the price with his blood. If only we could fully comprehend the payment he made for us. If only we could believe peace is ours. We could lead more harmonious lives with those around us, stop the fighting, the striving, the meanness, the competitiveness, and all the other negativity we put into our world. No more hostility!! I’m all for that.
“For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility” Ephesians 2:14 E
Jesus humbled himself coming as the Prince of Peace to live as we live, dealing with the same issues we face, he was tempted to sin just as we are, ultimately dying for us. He did all so he could have a relationship with us! Let’s do him a solid this Christmas season and start living like we believe Jesus came as the Prince of Peace to surround us with his peace so we could live in peace with one another.
Praying 2 Thessalonians 3:16 over you today; “Now, may the Lord himself, the Lord of peace, pour into you his peace in every circumstance and in every possible way. The Lord’s tangible presence be with you all”(*today and every day) *added by LSweet
Here’s a few more scriptures on peace along with one of my all time favourite versions of Little Drummer Boy.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26 ESV
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27 ESV
“do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 ESV
Lay aside the busyness this season brings and take a moment to remember who we are celebrating and why. Share the story of how the Prince of Peace, Jehovah Shalom, came to earth not only to save us from our sin but to give us a peaceful life too! And let’s not get too caught up in gift buying and giving that we forget to thank him for his sacrifice.
