It’s unfortunate that we sometimes forget who Jesus is and what he did for us. This time of year though is the season where even non believers may give pause to who the Saviour of the world is and the sacrifice he made for us all. This is a time when Christian’s have the opportunity to really share Jesus’ love and bring hope to those living in darkness. Its a time to encourage the forgotten, the downtrodden, and the lost to give their lives to Jesus. Everyone’s hearts seem a little softer and more open this time of year to receive the ‘Good News’ about Jesus Christ our Savior. 

The Good News is a person: Jesus of Nazareth, the Saviour of all. The One who gave up Heaven to come walk this earth so he could offer us all eternal life in Heaven with him. Our Saviour who died on a cross in order to redeem humanity, announced himself as coming "to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” Luke 4:18

Savior: the one who saves, can also be translated deliverer, liberator, redeemer of sin, saver of souls.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:11

And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 1 John 4:14

Ever since sin entered the world in Genesis, people have been looking for a Saviour a deliverer. Someone to save them from the evil of this world. Someone to deliver them from their sadness. Someone to rescue them from the oppressive and corrupt leaders of their time. However, God had a plan from Genesis 3:15 to send One who would save and deliver his people from their sins. We have been saved and delivered by Jesus Christ. Thank God for this wonderful gift!

We all need a Saviour! The Good News is God has sent us a Saviour and his name is Jesus! He gave his life for ours. He humbled himself by coming to earth as a helpless little baby. When we look at a baby, any baby, we are filled with awe and wonder and believe them to be the most precious gift of all. A miracle. Jesus was also that same kind of precious gift and so much more.

“But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” Titus‬ ‭3:4-7‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

While we are celebrating this season, a season of giving, of loving, of celebrating, a season of comfort and joy, enjoying our gatherings of family and friends, we should never forget that for Jesus, this was a time of great sacrifice and pain. The lashings he took on his back, the crown of thorns pressed so tightly on his head, the nails in his hands and feet, being nailed to the cross he had to carry on his own back. He was crushed, abandoned, destroyed and in despair all because he chose to take on all of our sin. Such a stark contrast to our celebrations. So please, thank him for all he has done to give us the most precious gift of all, the gift of life and eternal salvation.
