Be Generous
“Every time you give to the poor you make a loan to the Lord. Don’t worry—you’ll be repaid in full for all the good you’ve done.” Proverbs 19:17 TPT
We all need a certain amount of money to ‘live on’ but so few of us are satisfied living with scarcity. Many of us are blessed with far more than the bare necessities yet fail to help those, or someONE in need.
God has promised to supply our needs so isn’t it better to think how much can I give (away) rather than how much can I keep (for myself)?
“We will show mercy to the poor and not miss an opportunity to do acts of kindness for others, for these are the true sacrifices that delight God’s heart.” Hebrews 13:16 TPT
Giving makes our Heavenly Daddy proud and is good for the heart, it also helps us get closer to God. When we give, the blessings we receive are so much greater than any earthly possessions. Life shouldn’t be about getting it should be about giving
“He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, But trouble will come to him who seeks evil. He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.” Proverbs 11:27-28 NKJV
As followers of Christ we are to faithfully share what we receive by giving to our local church, supporting missions, and helping those in need. Generosity isn’t only a character trait, it’s right at the heart of what our faith is all about. It’s where we should live competing to outgive one-another rather than out earning or out spending the Joneses.
C.S. Lewis defined Christianity as ‘a kind of giving’. God has poured out his generosity to you in Jesus (John 3:16), and you are called to respond in faith and generosity to others.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 NKJV
God is the ultimate in generosity and we are called to be imitators of him. He blesses us with material wealth so he can bless others through our generous giving.
Lord, teach us to be more and more generous, may we never be satisfied with the level of our giving but always desire to give more, do more and be more. May we become more and more generous not only with our money but our time and talents too. Lord help us remember if it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t have all we do. Amen.
